2014年6月12日，特斯拉首席执行官埃隆·马斯克在特斯拉官博《All Our Patent Are Belong To You》中称，为了让电动车拥有更好更快速的发展，特斯拉将公开其电动车的技术专利，并对正当使用其专利的个体或企业将不会进行诉讼。随后，Palo Alto总部内的特斯拉专利墙也借此次“开源运动”正式被“推倒”。这样的一个举措，可以称得上是特斯拉战略层面的一个里程碑，随后这件事引来了汽车行业内的热烈讨论。
